LULAC Announces Fiesta Queen Candidates

Five candidates are seeking to be the reigning Fiesta Queen for the LULAC Annual Fiesta, which will be held Saturday, September 1st, 2007, at the LULAC Council 10 Center, 4224 Ricker Hill Rd., Davenport, Iowa.  This will be the 48th year the fiesta has been held in observance of the Mexican Declaration of Independence from Spain in 1810.
Proceeds from this celebration go toward 

scholarship grants to high school graduates to further their education goals.  To date LULAC Council 10 of Davenport has awarded over $370,000 in scholarships since 1977.

The candidates for Fiesta Queen are:

Monica Herrera (foto not available)– Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Angela and Francisco Herrera.  Monica, 16, is a junior at Davenport Central High School.  She is a member of school choir and is a teacher assistant.

marisela_villalpando Marisela Villalpando –Rock Island, daughter of Dora Cabarles and Vicente Villalpando.  Marisela, 20, is a freshman at Blackhawk College.  She has been a member of the Day of Unity Committee, the March of the Quad Cities, the high school yearbook and high school newspaper.

martha_peralesMartha Perales – East Moline, Ill., daughter of Maria and Pedro Madrigal.  Martha, 17, is a junior at United Township High School.  She is a certified nursing assistant and a volunteer at Aspen and Rosewood Nursing Home.

bianca_meriahBianca R. Mendez (left) – Milan, Ill., daughter of Roberto and Teresa Mendez.  Bianca, 19, is a Sherrard High School graduate where she was an honor roll student and a cheerleader.  She volunteers at Viva Quad Cities, the Child Abuse Council, Red Cross Club, the Illinois Migrant Council, and many other activities.

Meriah C. Mendez (right) – Milan, Ill., daughter of Roberto and Teresa Mendez.  Meriah, 16, is a freshman at Sherrard High School.  Meriah is a member of SHS peer club, track, soccer, cheerleading, Viva Quad Cities, Bethany for Children and Families, Cinco de Mayo Festival, Floreciente Center and many other activities like her older sister.
