The Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act, H.R. 4088 is still pending before a house committee and will not see any action for the time being. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) is still evaluating whether to support the bill or not. Braley has discussed strengthening the borders whether they are the Canadian or Southern borders because “open borders aren’t secure.”
Rep. Braley believes that big corporations that employ undocumented workers and take advantage of them need to be held accountable. His argument is when employing undocumented workers, companies don’t have to follow the same workers’ rights standards. Braley is opposed to amnesty, but believes that there needs to be a set, tough path to citizenship for undocumented workers in this country.
“Congress and the President have failed to secure our borders. It is high time to secure our borders and get tough on big corporations that violate the law. I am working to hold big companies accountable for violating employment law in Congress,” Congressman Braley said.
Congressman Phil Hare (D-Ill.) is not a co-sponsor of H.R. 4088. Hare’s Communications Director, Tim Schlittner said the congressman shares the frustrations of his colleagues over not passing immigration reform. Hare believes an enforcement only approach will not effectively secure our nation’s borders.
“The immigration crisis is a complex problem that calls for a comprehensive solution that toughens our approach at the border, penalizes employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, implements a guest worker program that does not endanger American jobs, and creates a sensible path to citizenship for those who work hard and play by the rules,” Schlittner said.
