Instruments on Deck is the latest interactive exhibit to be featured at the Lincoln Children’s Museum.
Featuring several different percussion instruments, the outdoor installation allows those walking along Lincoln’s Centennial Mall to hear the sounds of kids making music.
“We are a place to introduce all things, whether it be science, space, medical, all the fun things, as well as music,” Tara Knuth, CEO of the Lincoln Children’s Museum said. “That hopefully helps them to say, oh, I love this. I enjoyed that. I want to learn more. I want to grow with that. And then our community offers so many opportunities for them to take that interest and go further with it.”

On top of that interest, another benefit of musical play is that it can assist in a child’s brain development.
According to studies, such this 2024 study from the Journal of International Psychology and Educational Studies, musical play can benefit children’s cognitive development.
“I think all play has benefit, especially with music,” Knuth said. “The earlier that you introduce music to kids and to children, the better it is. I mean, even into infants being introduced to music has benefits, and has benefits to their brain development.”
With donations from the Dolezal Family, and the work of Percussion’s Music, this year-long endeavor became a reality
The Lincoln Children’s Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, and more detail can be found at the Lincoln Children’s Museum website.
