Lincoln and Omaha, NE- The Lincoln and Omaha police departments released statements related to immigration on Tuesday, each saying the departments would not participate in raids.
The Omaha Police Department and Mayor Jean Stothert released a video statement saying the department does not intend to participate in any raids related to immigration, and is not aware of any planned raids.
“The best approach to police this matter, from our point of view, is the Omaha Police Department maintains our role as police officers in this city the immigration side of things from the federal authorities,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a press event. “They will be the ones to do immigration enforcement.”
Stothert added citizens should not be afraid to call 911 when they’re in need of help.
“We don’t want anyone to be afraid if you are a victim of a crime or a witness of a crime,” she said. “We want you to feel free to call 911, and the Omaha Police Department will help you and will not check your legal status.”
Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow said in a press release the department would continue to enforce city ordinances and state law with equal treatment, regardless of an individual’s immigration status.
The release stated LPD is “committed to ensuring public safety for all who call Lincoln home.”
“We want to assure the community that filing a police report or accessing law enforcement services is not dependent on citizenship or immigration status and can be done so without fear,” Morrow said. “LPD services are available to all who need assistance or want to report a crime. We are dedicated to making sure everyone feels safe and treated with respect when they interact with LPD officers.
Morrow also reminded community members that immigration enforcement remains a function of federal law enforcement. It is not the role of LPD to participate in arrests or transportation of those placed into custody for immigration violations.
“The Lincoln Police Department does not contact individuals to determine immigration status and does not have the authority to enforce immigration laws,” Morrow said. “Similarly, LPD does not make inquiries regarding immigration status in the course of routine investigations, as outlined in the department’s policy on unlawful or improper bias in public safety.”
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that with few exceptions, local law enforcement has no authority to enforce Immigration violations.
“Just as our Federal partners come to our assistance when needed, LSO will provide assistance if requested and will cooperate within the scope of our legal authority and responsibilities,” The statement said.
The Justice Department also announced plans to direct federal prosecutors to investigate state or local officials who stand in the way of enforcing immigration laws.
