The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has embarked on a very exciting project in the history of Latino voting rights in Iowa.

We have completed the first-ever analysis of our community’s registered voters and have identified approximately 35,000 Latino voters.

LULAC is now in the process of conducting a “Get out the Vote” effort to Latino voters through mail and phone calling, encouraging participation in the voting process and support in registering 15,000 additional Latinos before Election Day – November 6th.

Our community is an ever-increasing part of Iowa’s population, and comprises 158,014 residents, or 5.2 percent of Iowa’s 3 million residents.  By working together, we can make Latinos a stronger voting bloc in Iowa.

LULAC – Iowa supports these policies:

• Education: We want a universal and quality public education program for all students including immigrant children. We support legislation and policies both at the Iowa Legislature and in Congress that are targeted at decreasing the Hispanic dropout rate and closing the perceived achievement gap between minority and mainstream students.

• Healthcare: We support universal healthcare that is affordable and accessible to all including expansion of insurance coverage for poor families and prenatal and women’s care.

• Jobs/economic development: We support those policies that further our goal of equal pay for equal work for minority employees, as well as programs and policies that provide money to stimulate job growth and training opportunities.

• Immigration: We are in favor of a national comprehensive immigration reform law that would make it fairer and faster for Latinos to obtain legal employment and citizenship in the United States.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) was founded in 1929, and is the oldest Hispanic / Latino civil rights organization in the United States. The organization was founded to empower Hispanics at a time when they were denied basic civil and human rights. Today, the organization continues to play a role in Latinos’ access to the political process and in equal educational and employment opportunities.
