Des Moines Area Community College has named Lori Suddick as its new president, with her arrival on campus tentatively set for June 15.

The DMACC Board of Directors voted in a special meeting Monday morning to choose Lori Suddick, one of four finalists brought to campus in March to answer questions from students, faculty, staff and leadership, as the community college’s fifth president.

Suddick’s selection came after an extended search, started in summer 2025 ahead of Rob Denson’s retirement from the presidency and stretched after two of three candidates dropped out before scheduled campus visits in October.

“It took us a little longer to get there, but I think we have an exceptional candidate to fill that spot and guide us into the future,” Board President Kevin Halterman said during the meeting.

Suddick has served as president and CEO of College of Lake County in Illinois since 2018, with 26 years of experience in higher education, according to her curriculum vitae. She will join DMACC as interim president Liang Chee Wee prepares to depart at the end of June.

During her day of forums at DMACC, Suddick said her favorite part of her work is ensuring every student, whether they are a part of her institution or not, has a pathway to their future, whether it be through traditional education, professional training or other programs.

“DMACC is a cornerstone of Iowa’s economic and social vitality,” Suddick said in a news release announcing her selection. “I am excited for the opportunity to lead an institution that is so vital to so many students, families, businesses, and industries throughout Iowa.”

She added in the release that every student “has a right to access and succeed in higher education,” and see the benefits of that education and the opportunities that come after it. A first-generation college student herself, said in the release she is committed to “fostering a student-first environment” at DMACC.

The board approved a motion to negotiate a contract with an annual salary of $381,000 with Suddick, with coverage of moving expenses, allowances for annuity and a vehicle and expense accounts.

Halterman thanked all of the people who helped during the presidential search process during the meeting, including those who served on committees and participated in the forums.

“I think she’s an exceptional candidate,” Larry Ebbers, search consultant for the presidency, said during the Monday meeting. “I’ve known her for several years, and I think that we received a very strong response from the DMACC faculty and staff and community members, and so I think that we’re very supportive of her.”
