As the Republican National Convention kicks off this week, Republicans and former Republicans from across Iowa are publicly disavowing Donald Trump and announcing their support for Joe Biden this fall.
“Through his actions and rhetoric, Trump has demonstrated that he lacks character and competence to lead the nation and has engaged in corrupt behavior that renders him unfit to serve as president,” said Republican Congressman Jim Leach. “While some of us hold policy positions that differ from those of Joe Biden and his party, the time to debate those policy differences will come later. For now it is imperative that we stop Trump’s assault on our nation’s values and institutions and reinstate the moral foundations of our democracy.”
“I am a blue collar small town business owner, a lifelong former Republican, and I will be enthusiastically voting for Joe Biden this year,” said small business owner and Carlisle resident Lisa Fleishman. “I don’t know what happened to the party I used to belong to. I can’t support a president that is pulling children away from their parents. Donald Trump has failed this country in combating a global pandemic — he has let 170,000 Americans die since March, and all he has to say in response is ‘it is what it is.’ I’m inviting Republicans and Independents to join me in voting for Joe Biden. We need to vote like our country’s future depends on it — because it does.”
“I’m a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and I’ve been a Republican my entire life,” said Davenport native Chris Eubanks. “The way I see it, this upcoming election is the most important election in U.S. history. Joe Biden is the best leader who will steer us out of this crisis — he will restore the soul of the nation and will protect our families at home and aboard. Joe Biden is the antithesis of Donald Trump — he and his family have committed their entire lives to service to our nation. Joe Biden has a fierce record of defending our veterans and troops, and will equip our service men and women before he sends them into harm’s way. I am proud to be voting for Joe Biden this fall, and I invite my fellow veterans to join me.”
