This past week for international soccer, Mexico remains Group 2’s number one for the CONCACAF group play after two more victories. Hurricane Gustav forced Jamaica to make their home game an away game, with Jamaica playing in Mexico City as opposed to the Mexican team in Kingston as was scheduled. Mexico beat Jamaica soundly 3-0, never looking back after Andres Guardado curled in a free kick in the third minute. Later, they nailed a 2-1 victory over Canada in heavy rain, with the opening goal scored by substitute striker Omar Bravo ten minutes into the second half, and the winner falling to Rafael Márquez at the 72nd minute. Ali Gerber supplied Canada’s lone goal five minutes later, but Mexico took a large majority of the shots in the game.
Honduras also defeated both Canada and Jamaica to stay within three points of the lead. The United State remained at the top of their group (Group 1), and is the only team other than Mexico in the competition to slate three wins in as many games.
In the CONMEBOL, Brazil slumped to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Bolivia and at 3-4-1 are now 4 points shy of the table leader, Paraguay, and are only placed higher than Argentina by one goal on the differential. Chile, who had only scored four goals in eight matches, bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Brazil to crush Columbia 4-0, leapfrogging Uruguay into the fragile number 4 slot. Uruguay was unlucky to settle for a fourth draw, this time against Ecuador, though they remain tied with Paraguay for the best goal differential in the competition (10). Uruguay faces the top four teams in four of its next five games, which won’t make their job of claiming fourth place any easier.
