A connecting ramp from westbound I-80 to westbound I-235 in Des Moines will close from Friday evening through Monday morning. The Iowa DOT has established a detour via U.S. 69/Northeast 14th Street.
DES MOINES, Iowa — The ramp connecting westbound Interstate 80 to westbound Interstate 235 in Des Moines will close at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, weather permitting. The Iowa Department of Transportation has established a detour through U.S. 69/Northeast 14th Street while crews complete bridge work.
The closure will allow construction crews to finish work on the westbound I-235 bridge over Northeast Broadway Avenue. During the project, westbound I-235 will also be reduced to one lane, which could cause additional delays in the area.
The restriction affects the westbound I-80 to westbound I-235 connecting ramp. The Iowa DOT has not announced a complete closure of I-80 or I-235 as part of this particular operation.
Detour uses U.S. 69/Northeast 14th Street and Exit 137A
Drivers approaching the closed ramp on westbound I-80 will follow a signed detour through the Northeast 14th Street interchange.
- Continue west on I-80 instead of taking the closed ramp to westbound I-235.
- Take Exit 136 for U.S. 69/Northeast 14th Street.
- Follow the marked detour to return east on I-80/I-35.
- Take Exit 137A to connect with westbound I-235.
The detour returns traffic to the same westbound I-235 route after bypassing the closed connection. The Iowa DOT has published a map of the I-80 to I-235 ramp closure and detour showing the affected interchange and alternate route.
Westbound I-235 will have one open lane during bridge work
Construction on the bridge over Northeast Broadway Avenue will limit westbound I-235 to one lane while the ramp is closed. The Iowa DOT’s Grimes construction office warned that the restriction may cause traffic delays.
The closure is scheduled to remain in place throughout the weekend, rather than only during overnight hours. The planned reopening is 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, provided weather conditions allow crews to complete the work as scheduled.
This project is separate from the overnight closures associated with the Southwest Mixmaster in West Des Moines, which have a different schedule and affect other interstate connections.

The Iowa 511 traveler information system provides updated road closures, traffic conditions and construction restrictions throughout Iowa.
Traveler information is also available by calling 511 within Iowa or 800-288-1047 from elsewhere in the United States. The system is available through the Iowa 511 mobile app.
The Iowa DOT reminds drivers that moving-violation fines are at least doubled in work zones. Posted speed limits and temporary traffic signs remain in effect throughout the construction area.
