Freedom Run 5K

The 14th Annual Freedom Run 5K is more than a race, it’s a tribute to the men and women who serve and have served in the U.S. military. The event includes a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K Run/Walk, Tyson Double Time Loop, and IHMVCU Brigade of Kids Races, offering something for participants of all ages and activity levels.

Organizers describe the Freedom Run as a full military-themed experience, from the authentic Civil War cannon used to start the race to the dog-tag medals placed around finishers’ necks by real soldiers. Participants can also expect military vehicles along the course, volunteers holding American flags, camo-netting over the refreshment area, and unique military-style race shirts.

More than anything, the event is designed as a show of appreciation for local military members and their families, while bringing civilians and service members together in a spirit of camaraderie and community. Whether you run, walk, cheer, volunteer, or sponsor, the Freedom Run offers a meaningful way to take part.

Spend Labor Day morning running for a good cause at the 2026 Run with Carl, which includes a 5K, a 5-mile race, and a half-mile children’s fun run for ages 12 and under.

After 20 years, the Schillig family ended the race but continued its scholarship support. In 2014, the Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation and the Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation joined together to keep the race going. Funds raised now support grants and scholarships for area students. In 2015, Ascentra Credit Union became the title sponsor and continues in that role today.
