Moline, IL- On November 23, 2023, the historic Mac’s Skelly Gas Station in Moline, Illinois, received a prestigious designation, officially joining the National Register of Historic Places. The dedication ceremony, held at 820 5th Avenue, celebrated the site’s rich history and its remarkable restoration journey.

Built in 1932, the Tudor Revival-style station originally served Moline during a pivotal era of automotive expansion. Its architectural design, strategically set back from the street for easier car access, reflects early 20th-century innovation. Over the years, the building housed various businesses, including an antique store, HVAC service, and auto repair shop, before falling into disrepair.

Felix and Mary Vallejo purchased the property in 2018, launching a three-year restoration project with community support. Contributions came from organizations like the John Deere Foundation and Global Communities, while muralist Sarah Rob worked with the Floreciente Association to create an adjacent community mural. Historical preservation experts, including Barb Sandberg and Habitat for Humanity’s Dan Misner, guided the work, ensuring the building’s integrity remained intact.

In 2022, the City of Moline designated the station as a local landmark. Today, it stands as one of only eight historical gas stations in Illinois recognized nationally. It’s also a vibrant hub, hosting events like the Mississippi Valley Region Automobile Club Tour and a Santa Photo Shop for local families.

The November dedication honored not just the building but also key contributors, including the late architectural historian Joyce McKay, who played a crucial role in securing the station’s national recognition. This event marks a significant milestone for Moline, preserving a unique piece of its automotive and architectural heritage for future generations.
