Who can resist fresh chips dipped in chunky salsa with a giant margarita on a patio in the summer? If that’s what you’re looking for, Guacamole Patio and Cantina has you covered.  With an extensive menu that goes well beyond tacos, try their table-side guacamole with a variety of add-ins, or any dish featuring Birria, the TikTok sensation served with Consome that drips with flavor from the tender slow-cooked beef that’s been simmering for hours. Every bite bursts with savory Mexican herbs and seasonings enhanced by the broth for dipping. The restaurant is the third for restaurateur Blanca Plascencia who also owns El Fogón restaurants in West Des Moines. Plascencia is passionate about creating a great dining experience. In 2022, she won the Iowa State University Ivy College of Business’ Woman Business Owner of the Year, and the American Dream Award by the Iowa Restaurant Association.

A native of Mexico, Plascencia takes pride infusing her culture into the dishes and drinks served at her restaurants. She especially loves Cazuelas, traditional clay mugs that hold cold drinks like those served in the markets of Tlaquepaque, Jalisco. She recommends the Mezcalina Jamaiquiña, a refreshing blend of hibiscus petal tea infused with Monte Alban mezcal. For the more traditional, there’s their signature house margaritas with summer flavors with a kick like spicy watermelon and jalapeño.

Besides the food, Plascencia is committed to a welcoming ambiance where the community feels at home. Just days after the grand opening, they hosted a fundraiser for the Chrysalis Foundation, a nonprofit with a mission to help women and girls that is close to Plascencia’s heart. This is only the beginning as Plascencia and her team work to connect to the Waukee community one handmade tortilla at a time. “El Guacamole offers a modern-style Mexican restaurant where you’ll feel right at home, surrounded by a warm and welcoming atmosphere and nutritious and flavorful dishes, including vegetarian options. Prepared with fresh ingredients and handmade tortillas prepared daily, most importantly, without the stress of cooking or breaking the bank.” The next time you want to take advantage of outdoor dining while the sun warms Iowa, head to 752 Hickman Road in Waukee and try this new addition to the food scene.
