It’s about to get even hotter this weekend in the Quad Cities.  Not exactly the line you want to hear as temperatures have sky rocked to record levels this week.  The good thing is the heat won’t come from the sun but from boxing gloves and speakers.  Fitness First Plus will host: Salute To Our Soldiers, Friday, July 22, 2011 from 4pm-Midnight.

There will be live exhibition fights with Gilbert Venegas in the main event, as well as live music from the Quad Cities own, Funktastic Five and Smooth Groove.  The purpose of this show is to help the Quad Cities Chapter # 2 Disabled American Veterans get a new van to transport veterans to and from Iowa City. “Each year we have a Christmas and Thanksgiving charity event,” said General Manager Jose Cerda.  “We thought July would be a great time to show support to the D.A.V. and we would like to choose a different organization to help every year.”

With the success of the last outdoor event that Fitness First had in 2009, the club wanted to continue to show that they are not just a gym by giving back to the community and members who have shown their support throughout the years. In addition to the fights themselves, Louis Rios, President of the USA Boxing Association will be honored as well.  “What is different about this event from our last show is that we have clubs from Chicago and other surrounding areas coming to participate.” explained Assistant GM, Josh Greer. Illinois Congressman Bobby Schilling will also be in attendance to show his support to all the young fighters.  “I’m doing this show to help the D.A.V.,” said Cerda. “But also to help these kids stay out of trouble by learning respect and discipline and teaching them how to be responsible.”
