Latino civil rights organization announces the historic milestone after Republican Mark Cisneros wins election to represent Muscatine at the Iowa State House
MUSCATINE, IA – Iowa Latinos made a historic gain in the election this week, boosting representation for the state’s largest minority at the Iowa State Capitol.
The 89th General Assembly of Iowa, which will begin session on January 11th 2021, will have its first ever Latino member from the Iowa Republican Party who will maintain control of the Iowa Legislature.
Candidate-elect Mark Cisneros won the election for Iowa State House District 91 to represent Muscatine, one of the largest Latino communities in Iowa. Mark Cisneros and his family have lived in Muscatine since 2008. As a former small business owner, Mark previously owned “Shop 2 Drop” in Muscatine and “Bella Boutique” in West Liberty from 2008 to 2017. Currently, he is employed in the transportation industry where he delivers fuel in the local area. While living in California, Mark was a Park Ranger in Los Angeles for 12 years and a Notary Public for the State of California working in the real estate industry.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Iowa and the LULAC Councils of Muscatine congratulates candidate-elect Mark Cisneros on the historic victory and stresses the importance of Latino voters and representation in Iowa.
“Muscatine made history. It’s a reflection of our community and the growing diversity here socially, culturally, and economically” said Nick Salazar, LULAC Iowa State Director. “It’s a reminder that Iowa Latino voters and candidates are diverse and should not be ignored or taken for granted. We commend Mr. Cisneros on the historic achievement and look forward to engaging with him to advance our communities”.
The LULAC Councils of Muscatine worked to get out Latino voters ahead of the election through various efforts such as voter registration, candidate town halls, hosting an early vote march from Muscatine City Hall to the County Auditor’s Office, and sending mailers to every Latino voter in Muscatine.
Candidate-elect Mark Cisneros will replace Representative Gary Carlson.
