This Saturday night, the UFC hosts one of the biggest cards of the year, and you don’t have to order Pay-Per-View to see it.
For the fifth time since their blockbuster business marriage, Fox television brings the UFC to primetime.
UFC on Fox 5 will showcase some of the biggest names in the sport today. It is also being dubbed the “old versus the new”, because of some of the pairings.
A welterweight showdown between Mike “Quick” Swick and Matt Brown will kick off the televised portion of the evening. Swick is coming off a knockout win over DaMarques Johnson last August on UFC on Fox 4.
BJ Penn looks to get his name back in championship status, but first he needs to get through GSP protégé, Rory McDonald. Penn has not won since knocking out Matt Hughes in Nov of 2010. McDonald is currently riding a three fight win streak, with one of those wins being over Nate Diaz.
In the co-main event, former light-heavyweight champion, Shogun Rua hopes to derail the five fight win train of Alexander Gustafsson. But a win over Shogun would help the Swedish sensation in his campaign for a title shot over the winner of Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones in 2013.
The night’s main event is as about intriguing as they come. Current lightweight champion Benson Henderson puts his title on the line versus the always colorful, Nate Diaz. Henderson has remained undefeated since coming over to the UFC from the WEC and is coming off two hard fought wars over Frankie Edgar. Diaz brings an unorthodox stand up game paired with one of the best ground games in the sport. But, along with those attributes, Diaz is known to trash talk during his fights, forcing his opponents to fight off of emotion, which could be a recipe for disaster if Henderson takes the bait.
UFC on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz is Saturday, December 8th, live from Key Arena in Seattle, WA, 8PM ET, 5PM PT.
