The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® is notably known as The Greatest Show On Earth®! Among the many acts, 12 exotic Bengal and white tigers listen suitably to their trainer; Tabayara “Taba” Maluenda who with the large creatures takes breaths away and is renowned as “one of the greatest animal trainers of his time”.
But what truly distinguishes Taba, is that for the first time in the history of the Ringling Bros. circus he is the first Latino animal trainer.
Taba enthusiastically shares how this accomplishment brings him excitement and joy, “It gives me such an honor to represent the Latino community. And even more to be able to give the circus some Latino flavor.”
Being a native from southern Chile has inspired him to always show his true roots. “I love to bring in my own Latin style with the music, and the way I move with the animals, it’s what people will notice a lot from my act.”
Taba has always had a passion for the considerably large animals, as he is the sixth generation of his family to partake in leading roles at the circus.
Spectators gaze in awe and amazement when Taba is enclosed within a cage with a 500-plus pound tiger, any other person would be terrified to stand in his shoes, but not Taba. This trainer knows exactly what he’s doing when handling the animals; “I have a connection with them because I am with them everyday. I get to know all of their personalities, so I am never fearful.”
The greatest trainer spends a remarkable 14 hours a day ensuring that the tigers, horses and elephants are taken care of to the best of his ability.
Taba does it all with love for the circus and his animals, “I know that these are important parts of show, and with all the effort of the teams we bring on a spectacular performance.”
