Standing with Tea Party extremists, Paul has a history of anti-immigrant rhetoric
Milwaukee – Last week, Hispanics for School Choice and the LIBRE Initiative, a conservative group focusing on national Hispanic outreach, announced that U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R–Kentucky) and Rachel Campos-Duffy, wife of U.S. Congressman Sean Duffy, would be visiting and speaking at St. Anthony School in Milwaukee. A graduate of St. Anthony’s and a leader in Milwaukee’s Latino community, Wisconsin State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa issued the following statement regarding Senator Paul’s visit to the 8th Assembly District:
“While I support the students, administrators, and families that send their children to St. Anthony, I cannot stand on the sidelines today as some in our community welcome U.S. Senator Rand Paul to the area. Senator Paul has been an outspoken critic of our nation’s immigrant communities, and has used incredibly cruel rhetoric when discussing those most affected by our country’s broken immigration system.
“As an alumna of St. Anthony’s, I am disappointed that Senator Paul was invited to speak at a roundtable discussion today. I hope community members use Senator Paul’s visit as an opportunity to educate themselves on his radical viewpoints on so many legislative issues; especially immigration reform.”
Senator Paul, a first term Republican, has quickly become a favorite of Tea Party activists for his extreme stances on several social issues. Senator Paul has gone as far as saying that children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants should be refused citizenship rights. Furthermore, he voted against the comprehensive immigration reform bill that was passed by the U.S. Senate last summer.
JoCasta Zamarripa is the first Latina elected to Wisconsin’s State Legislature and represents Wisconsin’s largest Latino community on Milwaukee’s near south side.
