Silvis is known as “A City of Progress,” over the past couple of years, Silvis has proved to truly be a city of progress. New business’s and buildings have been going up all over the city welcoming big names like Walmart, IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union, The Family Credit Union, Ace Hardware, Anytime Fitness, and many more to Silvis. These new businesses’s have not only put up many new buildings, but they have also created new jobs and increased revenue for the city.
Robert Cervantes has lived in Silvis for almost 30 years and has served as an alderman for the last 8 years. He is now running for a third term as alderman of the first ward in Silvis.
He attributes the city’s success to attract new business to the city administration, City Council, and the Mayor working together as a team. “You have to work as a team in any city government because one guy can’t do it all by himself” Cervantes mentioned. “That is why Silvis is the City of Progress and will continue to be the City of Progress for many years to come.” He added.
“One of my goals for the City of Silvis if for the Hero Street Memorial Park to one day become a National Park. I’ve been working with Congressman Phil Hare and now that Obama is the President we have a good chance to make it happen.” He added.
When asked about the effects that all the local lay-offs will have on the local economy he said “I relate to that. There are a lot of people out there hurting…There will be some tough times for the Quad Cities…but working together I believe we can save some jobs and even create more jobs.” Mr. Cervantes has been laid off work for the past year so he can relate to many of those going through rough times.
Primary elections in Silvis will take place next Tuesday February 24.
