Democratic Senators Hillary Clinton of N.Y. and Barack Obama of Ill. met with the National Council of La Raza or NCLR, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States on Sunday, July 22. Clinton’s event was titled “Latinas Brunch: Una Charla con Hillary” (Latina Brunch: A Chat with Hillary) where she was interviewed by Monica Lozano, publisher and CEO of La Opinion, the largest Spanish newspaper in the nation.
“I told Monica we should talk like we’re two girlfriends,” Clinton joked with the 2,000 people in attendance.
She was asked about how her views on Hispanics and the senator mentioned her close relationships with Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), her campaign
manager Patricia Solis Doyle and Dolores Huerta, a longtime activist who was associated with Cesar Chavez.
Clinton ended the event with mariachi music in celebration for a campaign chair who celebrated his birthday, former La Raza president, Raul Yzaguirre.
Senator Barack Obama was introduced with his campaign’s reggeaton theme song. His conference was titled “Foro del pueblo con Senador Obama” (a town forum with Senator Obama). The senator linked the struggles of Hispanics and blacks together.
“If there’s a child stuck in a crumbling school who graduates without ever learning to read,” he said, “it doesn’t matter if that child is a Latino from Miami or an African-American from Chicago or a white girl from rural Kentucky, she’s still our child, and the struggle is our struggle.”
Republicans candidates former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney, Ariz. Senator John McCain and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani as well as Democratic candidates former S.C. Senator John Edwards and N.M. Governor Bill Richardson were invited but were not in attendance.
