Memorial Day Services are scheduled once again at Hero Street Park in Silvis, Ill. on Saturday, May 24th at 11 a.m. with special guest speakers.  For the past 8 years Silvis 1st Ward Alderman Robert Cervantes has been organizing the event that honors all men and women of the armed forces not just the individuals honored at Hero Street.

“The street was started for the 8 Mexican-American boys but it’s for all veterans,” Cervantes said.  “Sometimes the biggest problem is that some non-Mexican-American folks may think it’s for the Mexicans but it’s not true, it’s for all men and women of the armed services.”

This year Cervantes also extended speaking invitations to Senator Mike Jacobs, Representative Mike Boland, States Attorney Jeff Terronez, and former Silvis Mayor Joe Terronez, some of which are regular speakers at the event.  The M.A.V.A. Color Guard will also be present at the event.

Alderman Cervantes says that he would like to see some improvements on the park and street but also would like some of the residents to take pride in their street and beautify their homes.

“[State Representative Phil] Hare said he would like to see the park become a national park,” Cervantes said, “because once it’s a national park, the government takes over and takes care of it.”
