President Obama’s Executive action might be on hold, but the fight for immigration reform goes on. People from different states of the country organize events and stay vocal about the need of immigration reform. Iowa residents are also invited to show their support of humane immigration reform. Please, come and participate in Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage in August of 2015.
Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage is presented by Asamblea de Derechos Civiles. La Asamblea is an organization with its own identity that it exist to organize immigrants from different congregations, mostly Latinos, “to build power for changes in the immigration system and the underlying political and economic structures.”
“La Asamblea began from the realization as a community that we needed to have our own identity and know what will be the issues that affect the immigrant community and community in general and see how we can establish an organization that represent the interests of the community without being some kind of umbrella of any other group. We wanted to walk with our own identity,” Antonia Alvarez, co-founder of La Asamblea explained.
La Asamblea has grown from within the churches and their goal is to change the community by inviting every person to act together and by acting together change the politics that might affect the future of the community.
Among other things La Asamblea advocates for comprehensive immigration reform. In the last couple of years the organization has done many different events in support of the immigration reform. This year La Asamblea will have the Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage. This is a weeklong series of actions starting on August 18 and concluding August 24. There will be actions, including rallies, processions and vigils, at campaign offices and events where presidential candidates will be present. According to La Asamblea they want the presidential candidates, both republican and democrat, to know that immigrants deserve justice, respect and liberty.
The participants of the Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage will make stops in the following cities and towns in Iowa: on Tuesday August 18: Decorah, Postville, Iowa City and Waterloo. Wednesday August 19: Quad Cities Thursday August 20: Davenport, Des Moines. From Friday August 21 to Monday August 24 the participants will be in Des Moines.
The issue of immigration is one of the most important issues for the presidential candidates in the current election. Many might not want to talk about it, but the problem will not disappear on its own. That is why it is very important to keep the dialog going and thanks to organizations similar to La Asamblea the immigration issue is still part of numerous political discussions. Mark you calendars and plan to participate in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform.
