The first Hispanic United States Attorney General in history, Alberto Gonzales resigned on Monday, August 27 citing no specific reason for his resignation.
Gonzales was an advisor for President Bush but Congress demanded his resignation claiming that he fired federal prosecutors for political reasons. Gonzales did not answer in his brief statement why he resigned and refused any questions. The resignation is effective three weeks from the announcement.
“I have lived the American dream,” he said. “Even my worst days as Attorney-General have been better than my father’s best days.”
President Bush held a press conference citing political reasons for Gonzales’ resignation.
“It’s sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person like Alberto Gonzales is impeded from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons,” he said.
Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) released a statement saying he was happy with the news saying that this is the first step toward restoring credibility to the department.
“News of Attorney General Gonzalez’s resignation is long overdue; he has at long last done the right thing and resigned,” he said in a statement. “I opposed his nomination because I believed the man who used his position as White House Counsel to authorize the use of torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay was unfit to serve as the nation’s highest law enforcement official.”
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) also released a statement mentioning that the Democrats got what they wanted and thanking Gonzales for his service.
“First and foremost, I want to thank Attorney General Gonzales for his service to our country. Alberto Gonzales made a tremendous impact in the Justice Department as an advocate for protecting children and aggressively pursuing child predators,” he said in a statement.
