Nineteen months.  That was the length of time the world had to wait and see how UFC welterweight champion, Georges St- Pierre (23-2), would look in his first fight back after

major surgery to repair his right ACL.  In that time, “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit (28-6), defeated Nick Diaz and won the Interim welterweight championship.

So while we anxiously waited for St-Pierre to return, Condit was waiting to exchange his belt for the real one.   In his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, in front of all his fans, George St-Pierre defended his title and won a unanimous decision over Condit.  It wasn’t without a few scares along the way though for the Canadian superstar.  Condit definitely gave St-Pierre his biggest test to date, something that GSP admitted to after the fight.  “People talk about ring rust and I definitely know what it is now,” said St-Pierre.  “Carlos gave me my toughest fight.”

Although St-Pierre did earn the win, Condit showed a lot of improvement off his back throughout the fight, as he was very active in throwing combinations and almost catching GSP in an arm-bar and a triangle choke.  Both times, St-Pierre was able to slide out of the hold because of the monstrous amount of blood coming from Condit’s face, courtesy of an elbow delivered by St-Pierre in Round 1.  It was in the third round that Condit came close to finishing the fight as he landed a beautiful kick that dropped GSP, but was not able to finish the fight.  It was ultimately what fans and the media have been negatively talking about St-Pierre lately that won him this fight.  Take downs and a lay- and- pray game plan.  Except this time, St-Pierre looked hungrier and more aggressive than we have seen him in years.  He also looked bigger for this fight, most likely attributed to the immense amount of strength and conditioning he had to do on his road to recovery.    The win over Condit definitely shines new light on a potential super-fight between GSP and Anderson Silva, who was in attendance watching.
