May is here and in the past years people seem to celebrate Cinco de Mayo a lot more than before. Aside the fact that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence day, but rather celebration of victory of Mexican Army over French in a battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo in the United States is turning into a day when Mexican culture is celebrated.

#1The Ganzos’s Nacho Ordinary 5K -May 2
Saturday May 2, 2015 at 9:00 AM at Ganzo’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, 3923 North Marquette Street, Davenport, IA. Registration cost $35 April 26 to May 1 and $40 May 1 to 2. Also children’s race Sombrero Shuffle with registration cost $10. For children up to age 12. Every child will receive a medal. Post race party with entertainment and awards ceremony. #2Ganzos’ 2015 Cinco de Mayo Fiesta -May 2
One of the biggest and most fun events in the Quad Cities. After the race there will be Post Race Fiesta with music by the band formerly known as Los Mocambos starting at 10:00 AM, but there is more, stick around to enjoy traditional Mexican dances performed by children from the Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico at 12:00 PM and if you are hungry participate at the Annual Taco Eating Contest at 2:00 PM. After the contest enjoy drinks and live music. The event will take place at Ganzo’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, 3923 North Marquette Street, Davenport, IA.

#4Glenview Youth Mariachi Band Fundraiser-May 5
Another great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and support local kids is Glenview Mariachi Band Fundraiser on Tuesday May 5th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Glenview Middle School. There will be a performance by the Glenview Youth Mariachi Band and DJ Guerrero. There will a be taco dinner sale . The cost of the dinner is $5 for a meal that includes 2 tacos, beans, rice, drink and tortilla chips. Glenview Middle School located at 3100 7 th Street, East Moline, IL.
#5For those who prefer something a little more serious join Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for their Multicultural Speaker Series. -May 5
Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch is a renowned, charismatic, passionate and influential speaker with a mission to empower the next generation of leaders. Consuelo served the U.S. Army for two decades. During that time, she broke barriers and set records in the military where she became the highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field of the U.S. Army.
On May 5th people from the QC Area and the Sterling area will have the opportunity to hear her speak at 2 different events.

►And that evening the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce’s Hispanic Business Leaders Committee will be offering a presentation given by Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch at Centennial Auditorium in Sterling, Illinois. Kickbusch has ties to the area as her father was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire and her family lived in Sterling during the 1950’s. Known as “Silver City,” the boxcar settlement was an early home for Kickbusch’s parents and a source of inspiration for her visionary leadership.
