FIVE SUNS OF THE AZTECS, a bilingual show, will be presented by EULENSPIEGEL PUPPET THEATRE and Friends on Friday, May 29, 5:00 P.M. at Ron-de-Voo Park in downtown West Liberty with community members acting as puppeteers. West Liberty fourth graders will open the show by processing around the park with puppets they made with Eli Portugal, Eulenspiegel’s partner puppeteer from Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
The show, based on Aztec creation myths, will be performed using beautifully painted articulated flat figures, flowing silk, and live music, Five suns of the Aztecs tells dramatic stories about the creation of the world: the sun, mountains, rivers, rain, flowers, creatures, and how the gods discovered that things went best when they worked together instead of competing with each other.
Eulenspiegel puppeteers Monica Leo and Angela Polowy, together with Eli Portugal and Outreach Director Cara McFerren, are creating and choreographing the show with the help of local artists Rebecca Hawkins-Valadez and Janet Rees. Rehearsals will take place May 26-28 at 6:30 P.M. The company still has openings for a few more puppeteers and musicians. Please call 319-627-2487 or email <[email protected]> if you’re interested in participating or want further information. Children and adults aged 8 and up are welcome!
