In 2011, #3 ranked lightweight, Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson (22-3-0) became season thirteen’s winner of the UFC’s reality fight show, The Ultimate Fighter. Since winning the show and a contract into the UFC, Ferguson has gone on a 10-1 tear through the division and most think he is well overdue for a title fight. This Saturday at UFC Fight Night Mexico, Ferguson will take on #2 ranked and former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos (25-8)in the main event and he and everyone else watching think that if can get through the former champ, a shot at the belt is next on his schedule. “Everybody wants me to have the belt,” said Ferguson. “I’m just going to keep doing me.”
And his “do-me” style is what has made Ferguson such a unique and fun fighter to watch. He is known to keep his opponents on their toes with his unorthodox style of fighting. “I’m a different type of animal,” explained Ferguson. “I’m better that the rest and that’s why I take pride in what I do.”
Being of full Mexican decent, fighting in the main event in Mexico City makes it even more special for Ferguson. “We sold out Mexico City in a day and I’m very grateful for that,” said Ferguson. “I’m 100 percent Mexican and my name is El Cucuy (which translates into The Boogieman). I put fear into every single dude that walks inside that octagon.”
With all the changes in the last few months and with big money fights setting his potential title shot back further, Ferguson has stayed calm through it all and is focused only on himself and his fight this weekend. “I’m not worried about what everyone else is doing,” said Ferguson. “If I was worried about that I wouldn’t be here right now.” “RDA thinks he knows me, he’s a fan of me and is going to get finished on November 5th.”
Tony Ferguson will take on Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC Fight Night Mexico, Saturday, November 5th on FS1. 10pm ET/7pm PT.
