According to some recent studies the exterior part of the can of food could be more dirty then a public restroom. Usually cans of foods stay in warehouse for a long time and there they can be exposed to rodents. When time comes cans are transported with any appropriate protection.

Rat’s urine contains a lot of toxic and deadly substances. It is very important to wash well the exterior part of the cans before you open them. Washing the cans will help you to keep safe from an infection that is called leptospirosis.  This infection is rare, very serious and contagious. Leptospirosis is caused by a bacterium Leptospira, a microorganism that has a form of spiral. One can get sick with the leptospirosis when you get exposed to this bacterium. Usually the bacteria can be found in warmer climates or in waters that were contaminated by the animals’ urine.

Bacterium incubates for 2 to 26 days. The following symptoms present themselves: fever, rigor, muscle pain, headache, dry cough, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other symptoms of leptospirosis that are less common are pain in joints, bones, throat and abdomen, and pink eye.

Antibiotics are used to treat this disease. In some cases that are complicated it is necessary to have a supportive care. If not treated on time, a person can die from this disease.

Even though a can may look clean, it is very important to wash the exterior part of it with soap and water before opening and consuming its contents.
