democratic_caucusHundreds of Davenport residents met at Garfield Elementary School to be part of “history in the making.”  It was Iowa Caucus night for Precinct D-73 and the school gym was packed with supporters of the Democratic nominees who did their best to get undecided voters to back their candidate.

In the process supporters offer food and refreshments to the undecided but they also offer information about their candidates and possibly a sticker for their campaign.
Democratic Chair of Precinct D-73, Karl Rohmberg used a small blue plastic cone as his “sound system” to direct and organize the crowd that included 344 registered voters of which 138 registered to vote that night.

“Were going to change the United States for the better,” he yelled through his cone.  Then he directs the crowd to divide in sections for each campaign.  The sections with less than 15 percent of the total votes (51 votes in this case) had to join a candidate with more the minimum percentage to figure out how many delegates the top candidates will get.  In the end Barack Obama won with 155 votes, followed by Hillary Clinton with 87 and John Edwards with 82.

Unlike the rest of Iowa Clinton took second place but not by much, earning 2 delegates as did Edward, while Obama got 4 delegates.
Olenka Gadzik was one of only 17 Bill Richardson supporters – earning him 4th place – because of his support of veterans programs.

“It’s our responsibility to fix them.  PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is going to affect families right in the heart and we need to spend more resources to get them healthy when they come back.  The cost of the war is not just over there, it’s going to be over here and it’s going to take a long time,” Gadzik said. “He just had a very strong, respectful perspective.”

Of the three with the highest percentage she liked Barack Obama but eventually joined the Edwards side since some of her friends and family were there, “they would get mad at me!” she said with a laugh.
