Eastern Iowa Coalition to deliver pair of flip flops to Senator Harkin for switching vote from last year and failing to solve one of the nations most pressing issues.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa On July 5, 2007, Eastern Iowa Coalition members will deliver a pair of flip flops and greeting card to Senator Harkin to express their disappointment in his failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Last year Senator Harkin voted in support of comprehensive immigration reform, but this year he rejected the bipartisan solution and has instead become a champion of the status quo: a badly broken immigration system. The fight is not over and the Eastern Iowa Coalition is urging Senator Harkin to step up and work to pass comprehensive immigration reform that restores the rule of law, secures our borders, strengthens our economy, and upholds the values of faith, family and hard work that are the cornerstone of our democracy. The text of the greeting card says: We are writing to you today to express our deep disappointment in your lack of leadership in fixing our broken immigration system and your refusal to support Senate efforts to produce legislation this year. On June 28, you joined 52 of your colleagues in turning your back on the American people by passing the buck on immigration reform. Now communities and state and local governments will have to deal with federal inaction once again. Whether you caved to an anti-immigrant environment that taints us all, gave up too soon on the process to address this issue, or sacrificed the interests of the country for inaccurate political calculations, you stand for a broken system that makes our borders less safe, our economy less stable, and our communities more vulnerable. Your message to our country is that the status quo is the best we can do. America deserves and can do better, and we need more Senators who are willing to exercise leadership, work in a bipartisan manner, and deliver solutions to the American people. We stand with the vast majority of Americans who demand a workable solution to the issue of immigration and who understand that our lives and our values are deeply intertwined with the condition and fate of immigrants. The current situation is untenable for our country and our communities, and one thing is clear: the issue is not going away. The nation has waited over two decades for a solution that restores the rule of law, secures our borders, strengthens our economy and upholds the values of faith, family and hard work that are the cornerstone of our democracy. We urge you to stand for that solution and work to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
