Republican presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says former President Donald Trump’s recent rhetoric about immigrants is not helping him win over voters ahead of the caucuses.

In Waterloo on Tuesday, Trump brushed off comments he made, saying immigrants who enter the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of America.”

DeSantis said immigration is a “huge issue,” but disagrees with how Trump is handling it.

“The fact that you’re even asking that question. He’s shooting himself in the foot by how he’s handling it,” DeSantis said. “I think that that’s not how you win over the voters that we need, and that he’s failed to win over in the past.”

DeSantis continues to substantially trail the former president in polls of likely caucusgoers. In an earlier campaign stop on Wednesday, he denounced the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that could keep Trump off the primary ballot in that state.
