Des Moines Public Schools has added three new sites where students and area children can get a free lunch at the district’s summer meals program.
The new locations bring to 31 the number of meal sites and include several apartment complexes. Remaining funds from the state’s 2024 Summer Meal Program Expansion Grant allowed school officials to add more sites and purchase tables, chairs and tents for people.
“We had quite a few students at both (apartment) grant sites, which we wouldn’t be able to serve without the grant,” said Amanda Miller, the district’s director of food and nutrition services and logistics.
Officials have received several inquiries about adding more apartment complexes, Miller said.
The meal program is part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program that provides “free, nutritious meals to children during summer break,” according to a district news release. The district has offered free meals to students for 40 years.
Here’s more about free meal sites:
Who is eligible for the free lunch program?
Children 18 and younger are eligible for the free meals.
Families should check with their local site because some are only open to DMPS students.
What time does lunch start?
Lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at most sites.
Many meal locations will be closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth and on July 4 for Independence Day.

Can my kids bring the meals home?
No. Participants are required to eat the meals on site.
Lunches are available on a first-come, first-served basis, the district said.
