Sometimes a push from someone else is all it takes to help you grow. Latinas Rising Together, founded by Joanna Chavez in Storm Lake, Iowa exemplifies how peer networks can empower individuals to reach their potential. Their motto, “Somos más que suficiente” (“We are more than enough”), embodies their mission of support and empowerment.

Chavez shares 6 strategies for building a network and keeping it going and growing.

Start with who you know
Chavez started with a private Facebook group and invited her circle to join and share.
- Start with a manageable platform like a private Facebook or WhatsApp group.
- Be patient, building a network takes time!
- Lead by example
“Show up!” says Chavez. “You can’t expect others to commit if you’re not going.”
- Prioritize attendance and engagement.
- Demonstrate the behavior you want to see in members.
- Ask questions
Chavez constantly asks the community to be part of their meetings and asks the group what they want.
- Leverage your network for resources and opportunities to share.
- Use feedback to guide growth and activities so members feel heard and valued.
Bonus: Asking questions creates opportunities to promote the group and recruit members and supporters!

Maintain Visibility
Chavez loves celebrating members.
- Highlight member achievements on social media and within the private group.
- Post events and updates regularly.
Bonus: Keeping members informed about one another and opportunities within the community increases interest and creates points of connection!
- Share Responsibilities
One person cannot do it all! Chavez calls on the talents in the group to help it develop.
- Distribute responsibilities among members to help them showcase and/or strengthen their talents.
- Create opportunities for leadership at all levels.

- Be Inclusive
Chavez is adamant that the group is not hers, it’s everyone’s and she constantly seeks feedback to ensure all feel welcome and heard.
- Actively seek input from all members.
- Use various platforms for feedback (polls, discussions, votes, etc.) and make changes accordingly.
