Yris Guzman is the owner of El Jardin De Yris, a custom flower arrangement provider in Des Moines, established in January 2023. Born and raised in Perry, with parents from Jalisco, Mexico, Yris’s felt the support of her incredibly resilient parents, and family, who all strongly encouraged her to open her own business. “My parents came to this country with nothing and have persevered and overcame their challenges in an unknown country. This has taught me that I too can start from zero.” Guzman draws strength from them, who instilled in her the value of determination and hard work.

Guzman’s passion for floral design blossomed during her visits to Mexico, where she found herself captivated by the flower arrangements inside local shops. With the encouragement of her family, she soon began arranging flowers as a hobby. Both of her grandmothers take great pride in their gardens, which provided further inspiration. Her brother decided to open his business, Eternal Construction, around the same time as her so they navigated the throes of initiating their entrepreneurial journey together.

Faced with challenges in marketing her business, Guzman turned to social media. As clients kept reposting and sharing arrangements they bought from her, her business garnered more and more attention. “Any chance you get, promote your business as much as you can,” Guzman offers as advice.

Her favorite part about being a florist is being a part of people’s special occasions. “I love seeing the reactions of people who get their arrangement and their excitement to receive them,” she emphatically shares. Guzman also cherishes the creative aspects of her workdays, whether she’s arranging flowers or crafting engaging social media content.

Surrounding entrepreneurship, Guzman emphasizes the ups and downs of business ownership. “Not everything or every day will be sunshine and rainbows,” she states. Lucky for her, in her industry, every day may not have sunshine and rainbows, but every day will surely be filled with the beauty of flowers.
