October might be official Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but cancer is not kind of disease that one remembers only once a year. Cancer is a scary disease that takes many lives. Not a single person in the world is immune to it and that is why, in order to stay healthy for many years to come, it is very important to have the right information available.

 

Many people have heard the name Gilda’s Club, but not many know what it is and what they do. Gilda’s Club is an organization that offers support and education to people who live with cancer and their families and friends.

According to Gilda’s Club, “As a Cancer Support affiliate, we are part of the largest employer of psychosocial oncology mental health professionals in the United States. Our global network brings the highest quality cancer support to the millions of people touched by cancer.”

This support group was named after Gilda Radner who worked in NBC’s Saturday Night Live and who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Families and friends, including children, participate in Gilda’s Club activities and support groups where they learn how to live with cancer. Davenport’s Gilda’s Club located at 1234 E River Dr. in Davenport and it has been operating for many years. Many residents of Muscatine made trips to Davenport so they could participate in activities offered here. Now Gilda’S Club comes to Muscatine as well.

Gilda’s Club and Unity Point Health partnered up and started offering this support group to people of Muscatine at the beginning of last year. Since their establishment in Muscatine the organization had offered many workshops and this November 14, 2014 they will offer their Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon at Flickinger Learning Center in Muscatine, IA for Hispanic women. “Salva Una Mujer” is an event where women can learn more about breast health, screening and care. Participants will learn more about screenings. Also, this event will provide women with resources that are available to help pay for the screenings.

There will presentation by Dr. Collette Hostetler and there will be representatives with important information from the following organizations: Care for Yourself, The Voucher Program, Pink Pass and Komen Quad Cities.

All women are invited to come and learn more about taking care of their health because healthy women can take better care of their families.
