Argentina remained four points behind Paraguay at second place on the CONMEBOL table after defeating Uruguay 2-1 last Saturday, their first win in seven matches, thanks to goals by the ever-reliable Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero. But their win was marred by numerous injuries, leaving Argentina in a serious selection crisis. According to Coach Alfio Basile, forward Sergio Aguero, midfielder Javier Mascherano and defender Martin Demichelis are indefinitely unavailable. They have also been compromised by multiple suspensions of forward Carlos Teves and the temperamental Juan Roman Riquelme. Elsewhere in the CONMEBOL, Paraguay maintained their four point lead at the top of the table with a win over Columbia and Brazil routed Venezuela 4-0 to swap 2nd and 3rd place with Argentina thanks to a +4 goal differential advantage.
