DAVENPORT, Iowa — Children can receive free coats, shoes and other winter essentials Sunday, Sept. 27, during a Soles for Children giveaway at Lincoln Center, 318 E. 7th St. in Davenport.
The event will run from 2 to 5 p.m. Organizers expect to serve approximately 400 to 500 children during the Davenport distribution.
Children can receive new coats, shoes, hats, gloves and socks. Free food, haircuts, hair styling, press-on nails, music and children’s activities are also planned.
A parent must be present with the child to receive shoes and coats.
The Davenport giveaway runs from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Davenport event is the second of two September distributions organized by Soles for Children in the Quad Cities.
The first took place Sept. 20 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Rock Island, where hundreds of children received winter clothing and other services. Organizers expect another 400 to 500 children at the Davenport event.

Soles for Children distributes new winter clothing and footwear to children who need them. The nonprofit’s annual program includes shoes, coats, mittens, socks and hats.
The organization aims to provide more than 1,000 children with new shoes, coats and other essentials each year across the Quad Cities.
This year’s two September events were planned to serve roughly 1,100 children between Rock Island and Davenport.
Free food and haircuts will also be available
The Davenport event includes more than clothing. Families can also find free food, children’s haircuts, hair styling, press-on nails, music and activities during the three-hour event.
Happy Joe’s pizza is also scheduled to be available at no cost.
The additional services are part of Soles for Children’s annual effort to provide several basic needs in one place rather than limiting the event to winter clothing.
Parents must attend with children receiving coats or shoes
Children receiving shoes or coats must attend with a parent. The currently published event information identifies adult presence as a requirement for receiving those items.

Soles for Children serves families across the Quad Cities
Soles for Children is a nonprofit based in East Moline that serves children across the Quad Cities. Founder Erwin King began the effort after seeing students attend school with holes in their shoes and experiencing bullying because they lacked adequate footwear.
The organization now distributes winter clothing and footwear annually and also operates youth scholarship and mentorship programs.
