DAVENPORT, Iowa — Davenport has temporarily closed The River’s Edge Ice Arena for an estimated four to five weeks after moisture problems led to mold in two locker rooms.
A restoration contractor will begin remediation Monday, Sept. 14, at the facility at 700 W. River Drive. The closure affects public ice activities, Learn to Skate classes and youth hockey.
Because of the closure, Davenport canceled the current Learn to Skate session and will provide full refunds. Youth hockey leagues also cannot use the arena while the work continues.
Meanwhile, Davenport Parks and Recreation customer service will move temporarily to Fairmount Community Center, 2980 N. Fairmount St. The department will operate with reduced customer service hours during the closure.
Summer moisture problems led to mold in two locker rooms
Staff began tracking moisture inside The River’s Edge in mid-July after high summer humidity caused problems in the building. They increased cleaning, monitored temperature and moisture levels and tested the air quality.
Testing later identified mold in two locker rooms. Davenport said crews found a common environmental mold, not toxic mold. However, some people who are sensitive to allergens may experience irritation.
As a precaution, the city closed the affected locker rooms to the public.
The River’s Edge has two indoor ice rinks. The facility hosts public skating, figure skating, hockey, Learn to Skate classes and other recreational programs.
Remediation starts Sept. 14, but Davenport has not set a reopening date
A restoration contractor will start work Monday. Crews will sanitize affected surfaces, flooring and air ducts with plant-based antimicrobial products.
For now, Davenport expects the arena to remain closed for four to five weeks. The city has not set an exact reopening date.
Davenport will provide additional updates as the remediation moves forward.
Learn to Skate participants will receive full refunds
Davenport will give full refunds to participants in the canceled Learn to Skate session.
In addition, youth hockey leagues will remain without access to The River’s Edge during the closure. The city has not announced replacement ice time for those programs.
