State Farm Mutual has begun sending payments from a one-time $5 billion cash-back dividend to qualifying auto insurance customers, including eligible policyholders in Iowa and Illinois.

The nationwide distribution covers more than 49 million qualifying State Farm Mutual auto vehicles. Payments average about $100 per vehicle, although the actual amount varies by state and by how much the customer paid in eligible premiums during 2025.

State Farm is sending the money in waves based on the state where each auto policy is assigned. The company expects the nationwide distribution to take several months.

Customers do not need to remain insured by State Farm to qualify. Eligibility depends on having had the correct State Farm Mutual personal auto policy during 2025 and meeting the minimum payment threshold.

Customers qualify if their State Farm Mutual auto policy was active during 2025

A customer can qualify if a personal auto insurance policy issued by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company was active at any point between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025.

The calculated dividend also must be at least $10.

A policyholder who switched insurance companies after 2025 can still receive the payment. State Farm does not require customers to have an active policy today.

The dividend applies specifically to qualifying personal auto insurance policies from State Farm Mutual. Homeowners, renters, life and other insurance products do not generate a payment through this particular dividend.

Payments average about $100 per vehicle but individual amounts vary

State Farm calculates each payment as a percentage of the eligible auto premium the customer paid in 2025.

The percentage ranges from 4% to 10%, depending on the state. State Farm bases those differences on each state’s contribution to the company’s 2025 auto insurance results.

As a result, the national average of about $100 per vehicle is not a guaranteed payment amount.

A customer with multiple qualifying vehicles can receive a dividend tied to each eligible policy, but the final amount depends on the applicable percentage and premiums paid.

State Farm has not listed one universal percentage for Iowa and Illinois on its general dividend information. Individual customers receive their payment amount as their distribution becomes available.

State Farm is sending payments in waves by state

State Farm began issuing the dividend during the summer and says millions of customers have already received payments.

The company is not sending all $5 billion at once. Instead, it is processing customers in waves according to the state assigned to their policy.

That means qualifying customers in Iowa and Illinois may receive their notifications at different times.

State Farm expects the full process to take several months because the dividend covers more than 49 million vehicles.

Customers can check payment information and state-specific timing through the official State Farm Dividend Payment Portal or call the Dividend Customer Contact Center at 1-888-808-9532.

Customers with an email on file can choose digital payment or a check

The way the money arrives depends partly on the contact information State Farm already has.

Customers with an email address registered with State Farm receive an email with instructions for accessing the dividend payment portal and selecting a digital payment or check.

The official payment-selection email comes from [email protected].

Customers without an email address registered with State Farm automatically receive a check through standard mail.

The dividend is a separate payment. State Farm is not applying the money as a credit toward a future insurance bill.

State Farm says customers do not pay a fee to receive the dividend

The insurer has also published fraud warnings as the payments reach customers.

State Farm does not charge a fee to receive the dividend and will not ask customers to send money before releasing a payment.

The company also says it will not request an email password, banking password, digital-wallet password or other personal password as part of the dividend process.

Payment information is available through sfdividend.com and the dedicated customer service number.

The $5 billion payment follows stronger auto insurance results in 2025

State Farm announced the dividend after its auto insurance business produced stronger financial results in 2025.

State Farm Mutual said its auto business recorded an underwriting gain of about $4.6 billion in 2025 after posting an underwriting loss the previous year.

The company announced the $5 billion dividend in February and began issuing payments this summer. It is the largest policyholder dividend in State Farm’s more than 100-year history.

The dividend does not determine future auto insurance rates. State Farm says future premiums are based on expected costs rather than the 2025 financial results used to calculate this payment.

Qualifying customers will continue receiving dividend notifications in waves as State Farm works through the nationwide distribution. Payment information remains available at sfdividend.com and 1-888-808-9532.
