Des Moines closes downtown streets for Arts Festival

Street closures for the Des Moines Arts Festival began this week in downtown Des Moines, bringing street restrictions near Grand Avenue, Locust Street, Walnut Street, High Street and Ingersoll Avenue.

The first closure affects 12th Street between Grand Avenue and Locust Street. That stretch will remain closed until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 30.

The festival will run from Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28, at Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines.

12th Street will remain closed until Tuesday, June 30

12th Street, between Grand Avenue and Locust Street, was the first stretch included in the closure schedule.

The restriction will remain in place until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 30. The closure is part of setup and teardown for the Des Moines Arts Festival.

The area is near Western Gateway Park, where festival activity will be centered during the weekend.

More closures will begin Wednesday near Locust Street

Another set of downtown street closures will begin at 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 24.

The restrictions will remain in place until 6 a.m. Monday, June 29, on these streets:

  • Locust Street, between 16th Street and 10th Street.
  • 15th Street, between Grand Avenue and Walnut Street.
  • 13th Street, between Grand Avenue and Walnut Street.
  • 12th Street, between Locust Street and Walnut Street.

These closures cover part of the area around Western Gateway Park and the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, where the festival will set up activities, artist spaces and pedestrian areas.

Grand Avenue will have limited access to the Central Library

Another set of closures will begin at 6 a.m. Thursday, June 25, and continue until 6 a.m. Monday, June 29.

Grand Avenue will be closed between 10th Street and 16th Street, with access limited to the Central Library.

11th Street between High Street and Grand Avenue; 12th Street between High Street and Grand Avenue; 14th Street between High Street and Grand Avenue; and 15th Street between Ingersoll Avenue and Grand Avenue will also be closed.

Downtown traffic could see delays near Grand Avenue, Locust Street and Western Gateway Park during the closures.

The festival will be held June 26-28

The Des Moines Arts Festival will take place from Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28, at Western Gateway Park.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, it will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free. Programming includes artists, live music, interactive activities, film and food options.

The festival takes place in one of downtown Des Moines’ busiest areas during major events, near Locust Street, Grand Avenue and the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

Until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 30:

From 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, until 6 a.m. Monday, June 29:

  • Locust Street, between 16th Street and 10th Street.
  • 15th Street, between Grand Avenue and Walnut Street.
  • 13th Street, between Grand Avenue and Walnut Street.
  • 12th Street, between Locust Street and Walnut Street.

From 6 a.m. Thursday, June 25, until 6 a.m. Monday, June 29:

  • Grand Avenue, between 10th Street and 16th Street, with access limited to the Central Library; 11th Street, between High Street and Grand Avenue.
  • 12th Street, between High Street and Grand Avenue.
  • 14th Street, between High Street and Grand Avenue.
  • 15th Street, between Ingersoll Avenue and Grand Avenue.

The Des Moines Arts Festival will close at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28. Several closures will continue until the morning of Monday, June 29, and the section of 12th Street between Grand Avenue and Locust Street will remain closed until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 30.
