Des Moines, IA – Every September, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa (BBBSIA) celebrates Big Brothers Big Sisters Month and the power of meaningful connections. From sharing pizza to grabbing coffee, small everyday moments can shape a young person’s future.
At BBBSIA, we see the power of mentoring every day through the 780 young people we served last year. But right now, more than 250 youth are waiting—most of whom are boys.
“We know this message may seem repetitive but it’s real. What most people don’t realize is that we get new child enrollments at a faster pace than we get new mentors. This means our waitlist stays full. This is why we need more adults to join our mission by becoming Bigs,” says Bridget Cravens-Neely, CEO at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa.
BBBSIA is highlighting the “Power of We”—the difference that happens when caring adults step up as mentors for youth. With 20 million Big Brothers Big Sisters alumni worldwide, the stories of Bigs and Littles prove that mentorship works.
Several community partners are showing up during Big Brothers Big Sisters Month to show the “Power of We.” Here’s how you can help.
Become a Big:
It only takes a few hours a month to change a young person’s life. BBBSIA is calling on adults to become Bigs and experience the joy of mentoring youth firsthand. At BBBSIA, adults can mentor one-to-one, team up with their spouse, partner, or friend as a Big Duo, or volunteer together as a family in a Family Match.

- GoodSon’s – Mon, Sept. 29 | 5–10 pm | 2815 Beaver Ave. A portion of proceeds benefits BBBSIA programs.
Coffee for a Cause:
- Mayalu Coffee – All September | 4226 Fleur Dr | “The BIG Wake Up” coffee blend
- Zanzibar’s Coffee Adventure – Sept. 15–21 | 2723 Ingersoll Ave | BIG/Little coffee blend. A portion of proceeds from the sales of these coffee blends support mentoring programs.
