Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 69th Annual Fiesta Day Parade Grand Marshal: Alex Chavira, Chief of Police, Sterling.
Chief Alex Chavira was born and raised in Sterling, Illinois. A graduate of Sterling High School, he attended Sauk Valley Community College with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. Chavira is a graduate of Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command.
Chavira began his career with Sterling Police in 1996. He served in the detective division investigating crimes against children. He later transitioned to the Illinois State Police Blackhawk Area Task Force where he worked undercover for seven years. Alex has served in various roles including Detective Sergeant and Deputy Chief of Operation until assuming the role of Chief of Police in 2020.
“Alex has just been an unbelievable asset to our community and deserves to be recognized for the work he has done with the Sterling Police Department and for setting a great example for all community members,” said his nominator. “Alex is a responsible and conscientious leader; a servant leader who genuinely cares about building community with those he serves. He has a wonderful working relationship with several community organizations, and he gives so much of his time to support schools, organizations, and businesses by being actively involved.”
Numerous Grand Marshal applications were accepted for the 69th Annual Fiesta Day Parade. Community members were invited to submit nominations to the SVACC Hispanic Business Leaders Committee, who then voted on all nominations.
