Mexico has always had its fair share of superstars when it comes to boxing.  Marco Antonio Barrera, Eric Morales, Julio Cesar Chavez and of course Oscar De La Hoya showed the world how lighting fast hands, technique and a warrior’s heart proved the recipe for success.

It’s been a few years since boxing has had someone with superstar status like De La Hoya, until now.  At just 20 years old, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KOs),  captured the attention of the world as well as the WBC Super-Welterweight title as he defeated Matthew Hatton, the younger brother of Ricky Hatton, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.  The judges voted unanimously for Alvarez and rightfully so. Alvarez dominated all twelve rounds against the Brit as he showcased his heavy hands and ferocious flurries at the end of the rounds.

Roy Jones Jr, who was one of the commentators for the fight said that Alvarez’s style was unlike any other Mexican boxer and even compared him to George Foreman because of his brawler like style and disregard for being hit.  Having only been champion for a short time now, Alvarez already looks to defend his title in June as Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said on ESPN.com that Alvarez will headline the summer card and hints that the fight could take place in Alvarez’s hometown of Guadalajara. “Last Saturday night was one I’ll never forget and I thank all my fans for their support,” Alvarez said. “I promise that I will always give them the fights they want to see and that I will proudly represent them and Mexico every time I step in the ring.”
