Many foreigners who live undocumented in United States dream of one thing only, their dream is to have valid and legal driver’s license. Unfortunately, there are many who take advantage of these desperate people. The great example of such is a company called Global Search located in Chicago, IL.
During some time already Global Search has been selling Mexican driver’s license from the following states: Aguascalientes, Hidalgo, Oaxaca and Veracruz. These licenses were sold in Illinois and Wisconsin. Global Search sold the document to people without giving them a driver’s test. That means that there are people out there who sit in front of steering wheel without knowing how to drive a car well and they are putting in danger not only themselves but every one of us.
Global Search charged $160 for this driver’s license. In comparison basic driver’s license from state of Illinois costs $10 and Mexican license costs about $40 in Mexico. Also, driver’s license from state of Illinois is valid and legal on territory of US, while Mexican driver’s license is valid and legal only in Mexico.
According to webpage of Mexican newspaper Excelsior, Global Search pays to states Agauscalientes, Hidalgo, Oaxaca and Veracruz $40 for each driver’s license they sell in United States. Incredibly, Global Search was contracted by those states to sell driver’s licenses on the territory of US.
One of the problems with the company Global Search is that it is not registered in a state of Illinois therefore everything they do is illegal. In addition, Mexican newspaper Excelsior lets everyone know that spokesperson of Secretary of State of Illinois wants everyone to be aware that this type of license is not valid therefore people should not obtain driver’s licenses from other countries that are not US.
It is important to know that drivers licenses of other countries are valid in US only if a person is here with a tourist visa, student visa or temporary worker visa. In state of Illinois it is allowed to use driver’s licenses from other countries for 90 days. After the end of 90 days period person has to obtain state issued driver’s license.
It’s a pity that so many people were deceived by this type of driver’s licenses. The truth is that if police stops someone with driver’s license from other country they can take a person to prison and charge him with fraud. Note that driver’s licenses from other countries are not even accepted as a valid picture ID.
On top of everything people let others to deceive them for the false belief that in order to get car insurance one has to have driver’s license. According to a local insurance agency, one does not need to have driver’s license to buy car insurance. Many agencies ask mostly for the following documents: matricula (picture ID given to Mexicans by Mexican Consulate), passport, or voter’s card. That is why very often driver’s license from other country not only does not help but actually it can cause a lot of damage to a person.
Because of all these reasons in the beginning of October of this year community leaders asked Mexican Consulate to investigate legality and validity of driver’s licenses sold by Global Search. Therefore Mexican Consulate advises to all people not to buy these types of driver’s licenses because they are not valid on the territory of United States for unlimited time.
