Free Poetry & Pie event brings live performances to Windsor Heights

Poetry Palooza will serve free pie before an evening of readings by Mike Pace, Patsy Shors, Lenny Bell and emerging Iowa voices on Aug. 6.

Windsor Heights, IA — Free slices of pie and live poetry performances will come together Thursday, Aug. 6, during the fifth annual Poetry & Pie celebration in Windsor Heights.

The event will take place at the Windsor Heights Community Events Center, located at 6900 School St. Doors open at 4:45 p.m., pie will be served beginning at 5 p.m., and the poetry program will conclude by 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Guests will be offered a selection of pie flavors before the readings begin.

Local poets and emerging writers will perform

The featured lineup includes media personality and published poet Mike Pace and Des Moines poet Patsy Shors.

Lenny Bell, a poet, cultural critic and community advocate, will serve as host and emcee. Bell is also vice president of youth and education programs at Oakridge Neighborhood.

Emerging poets will join the featured performers, giving newer writers an opportunity to share their work alongside established voices from the Des Moines area.

The program is part of Poetry Palooza’s schedule of free public events during 2026. The organization also presented its annual Des Moines poetry festival in April, with readings, workshops, student programming and the Iowa Poetry Slam Championship.
