The city said new structural inspections found unsafe conditions in buildings on the north side of the 200 block, near the demolition site at 201 and 203 East 2nd Street.

The City of Muscatine ordered the evacuation of all buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East 2nd Street after new structural inspections found conditions unsafe for occupancy.

The order is intended to protect residents, workers and customers in the area. A structural engineer determined that the affected buildings are not safe to occupy at this time and recommended that they be vacated immediately.

The inspections are part of the city’s effort to safely move forward with the demolition of the buildings at 201 and 203 East 2nd Street. The city said movement observed in those structures prompted a review of nearby buildings.

City staff will continue working with structural engineers, building professionals and property owners to determine how to proceed with demolition and stabilization in the area.

The City of Muscatine had previously awarded a contract to demolish 201 East 2nd Street. The contractor had also been working to stabilize the shared wall with 203 East 2nd Street.

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Muscatine Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire at the site. No fire was found, but firefighters discovered that a foundation failure had caused part of the roof at 203 East 2nd Street to collapse onto the building at 201.

The demolition contractor was notified immediately and went to the site to assess the situation. The city later put additional road closures in place to protect the public.
