Hinterland Music Festival is underway in St. Charles, Iowa, with three days of performances remaining after KATSEYE headlined the festival’s opening night Thursday.

Lorde will headline Friday, followed by Mumford & Sons on Saturday. Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko will perform Sunday evening before Colombian American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis closes the four-day festival.

The 2026 festival features an expanded site, a permanent outdoor stage and performances across the main festival stage, Miniland Stage and Campfire Stage. The grounds have grown by 130 acres and now cover nearly 400 acres.

This is the first year the festival has run for four days. Gates open at noon daily, although lines may begin forming at 10 a.m. Attendees who arrive earlier will be redirected to the campgrounds.

Campfire Stage performances begin after the main headliner each night. The late-night shows are listed with the corresponding festival day even when the final performance begins after midnight. The campground stage is open to all festival ticket holders, including those who are not camping.

Parking, road closures and festival entry

Parking lots open at 9 a.m. and festival gates open at noon each remaining day. Traffic is expected to be heaviest between 1 and 6 p.m. and immediately after the final performances.

The Exit 52 off-ramps from Interstate 35 will remain closed through Sunday. Drivers should follow the route assigned to their parking pass rather than relying only on GPS directions.

  • Exit 56: Box office, four-day general parking, premium parking, ADA parking, tent camping, RV camping and rideshare or passenger drop-off
  • Exit 47: Single-day parking and car camping

Festival wristbands and parking pass window stickers are required before entering the parking lots. Attendees who need to collect or replace a wristband or parking sticker can visit the onsite box office at Gate C from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Vehicle re-entry is not allowed in the single-day parking lot. It is allowed during daylight hours in the four-day, premium and ADA parking lots.

Des Moines shuttle hours

The Des Moines shuttle operates from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. each festival day. The final shuttle leaves the festival grounds at 2 a.m.

Shuttle passes are digital and must be displayed through the AXS app each time a passenger boards. Festival admission does not include shuttle transportation.

What can attendees bring into Hinterland?

Empty refillable water bottles and empty hydration packs are allowed, and free water refill stations are available throughout the festival grounds and campgrounds.

Backpacks, purses and other bags may be brought inside if they are no larger than 18 by 13 by 8.5 inches. Bags do not have to be clear.

Blankets and chairs without legs are also allowed. Chairs with legs, coolers, umbrellas, outside food and outside drinks are prohibited inside the festival venue. Ponchos or other waterproof clothing are recommended instead of umbrellas.

Weather and safety updates

Hinterland takes place rain or shine. The festival works with local emergency management officials and the National Weather Service to monitor conditions.

Location-based text alerts will be sent to people in the area if severe weather or another emergency affects the festival. No advance registration is required. Safety instructions may also appear on festival screens or be shared through onsite announcements and official Hinterland channels.
