Iowan activists are organizing protests and vigils after an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
Good, who was killed on Jan. 7, is the latest person to be involved in deadly incidents with immigration agents.
Hundreds of people marched in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening to mourn her death. In Iowa, Good’s shooting has sparked more conversations about increased immigration raids.
Here are some of the events happening around the state.
Ames ‘Power to the People’ Rally
Ames Democrats had already been planning to hold a rally on Saturday, Jan. 10 to protest the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Story County Democrats is organizing the peaceful assembly, which will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10 in Bandshell Park.
Interested participants are encouraged to RSVP online, but it’s not required.
Cedar Rapids ICE Protests
Protests in Cedar Rapids happened at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8 outside the U.S. Department of Homeland Security office.
The organization Escucha Mi Voz Iowa is expanding its Community Defense Trainings and Legal Observer Simulations at churches and community centers across Eastern Iowa in response to deaths tied to ICE enforcement. These trainings prepare immigrant workers and everyday people to safely intervene, document abuses, accompany community members, and protect one another when ICE is present.
Decorah ICE Protests
Decorah Community for Immigrant Rights is holding a vigil at Water Street Park on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
Des Moines vigil and ICE observation training
Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice planned to hold an emergency vigil and training on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
Participants will be trained on the basics of observing ICE activity and can get connected to Community Defense teams to protect neighbors from ICE threats.
Iowa City ICE Protests
Loose plans are forming through social media for protests in Iowa City. There is a plan to hold a vigil on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pentacrest.
Sioux City ICE Protests
Organizations are planning events on Facebook. According to a post from Cindy Waitt, executive director at Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention, there will be three vigils held on Jan. 8.
Museum Green Space at 1 p.m.
First Congregational United Church of Christ at 6:30 p.m.
Pavilion by Sweetgrass Uprising at 6:30 p.m.
