The plan went into effect at noon on Friday, Dec. 12, and will remain in effect until noon Monday, Dec. 15.

In Central Iowa, that means warming centers will be open to provide shelter and a break from the cold. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority is providing free rides to warming centers.

What is Polk County’s extreme temperature plan?

When temperatures are extremely cold or extremely hot, officials designate buildings where people can shelter from dangerous weather conditions.

These Extreme Temperature Centers may be open during the facility’s normal business hours or hours may be extended depending on the situation and need.
