The four-year-old boy who died Tuesday night when an alleged street racer crashed into the car he was in was a “beautiful, joyful, loving soul,” said Wilbert Faguada, who identified himself as the boy’s father.
“He did not deserve this,” Wilbert Faguada said in a Facebook post about his son, Marcos, “We are devastated and heartbroken.”
Des Moines Police said a 35-year-old Urbandale man was racing with another person, driving an “SUV style vehicle”, northbound on Des Moines’ Fleur Drive, crossed the median to the southbound lane of the 1700 block of Fleur and crashed into a the 2016 Honda Accord a 38-year-old Norwalk woman was driving. Police said the Accord had the four-year-old Marcos and an 8-year-old boy as passengers.
On Facebook, Wilbert Faguada said the four-year-old was his son, Marcos, the 8-year-old was his nephew and the driver of the Accord was his sister.
“Elva Leilani and I went to sleep in bed together and woke up crying a river this morning. We are devastated beyond repair our souls are empty,” Wilbert Faguada said in a Facebook post.
City officials called the collision “senseless and selfish” and pledged police resources to catch those responsible.
As of Thursday morning, Des Moines police had not identified the people involved and had not released information about any arrests.

Wilbert Faguada he asked for anyone with information on the other vehicle to come forward.
“If anyone knows who the other vehicle involved in the drag racing that killed my boy Marcos Faguada, I have a cash reward leading to that person(s),” he said.
Marco’s extended family set up a GoFundMe to help the family pay for the cost of the funeral and memorial. It had raised more than $28,000 as of Thursday afternoon.
“Share stories and cry with us as we struggle to comprehend why this happening to us,” the GoFundMe said.
