Tuesday night’s election results for the West Liberty city council elections shows Dana Dominguez and Omar Martinez as the winners of the two new city seats. They will be joining Cara McFerren and Jose Zacarias in the city council making it the first time West Liberty, or any city in Iowa, has a Latino majority city council representation.
Four out of the five city council seats will be held by Latinos.
West Liberty was the first town in the state of Iowa to achieve a Hispanic-majority population.
“I called Omar Martinez who won by seven votes and was in tears. A year ago, I did his father’s funeral, the first in West Liberty to die of covid and now he is an elected official.” Father Guillermo Treviño, a priest in West Liberty said to Hola Iowa.
“Dominguez is related to RC Dominguez who was a Moline, where I grew up first, alderwoman. Plus current city council officials, Cara McFerren, whose grandparents, John and Margaret Ponce, I pray for at mass often and Jose Zacarias who I work with through LULAC make me proud of being a Latino in the city of West Liberty.” He added.
